Apple Herb Honey Shrub 375 ml bottle

For this classic shrub, we infused Bernie's Best apple cider vinegar with organic fresh thyme. We added juice from local gravenstein apples along with raw local honey to balance the traditional tang of the oxymel (vinegar-infused medicinal tonic).

A shrub is a traditional fruit concentrate, like a syrup, preserved with vinegar and used to make or flavor beverages. A few ounces with bubbly or still water makes a fabulous drink all on its own (we recommend a dilution of 4 or 5 parts water to 1 part shrub), and there's no reason you couldn't use it as a cocktail mixer if that's your thing! Shrubs can also add zing to jam or salad dressing, and make a wonderful glaze for grilled meats.

Chicken Bone Broth -- 22 oz 22 ounces in a 26 oz jar

This flavorful broth is made from the bones, feet and heads of organic chickens. A splash of Bernie's apple cider vinegar helps draw minerals out of the bones. We simmer it at just the right temperature for 12-16 hours to draw out the nutrients without damaging them by overcooking, and to bring out a lovely flavor.

According to Sally Fallon, author of Nourishing Traditions, "[Bone broth] contains minerals in a form the body can absorb easily—not just calcium but also magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and trace minerals. It contains the broken down material from cartilage and tendons--stuff like chondroitin sulphates and glucosamine, now sold as expensive supplements for arthritis and joint pain."

You can simply heat the broth with a little salt and pepper, tamari, fish sauce, coconut aminos, miso or any flavoring of your choice. Add it to soups and stews, cook your rice or any starches in it, or braise chicken parts and vegetables for dinner. Cook it down for an umami-rich demi-glace! TSH worker-owner Mud Hut loves making Egg Drop Soup, cooking the whites in the broth first with a little salt and pepper, then adding the yolk and turning the heat off after just a few seconds.

We do not recommend that you freeze the beef broth in these jars. One ingenious way to incorporate broth into your life is to freeze it in ice cube trays, then store the cubes in a bag or container in the freezer. Heat a few anytime you want a cup of broth, add a few cubes when you cook rice or any starch, add to a soup or stew...you get the picture.

Essential Vegetable Soup with Chicken Broth -- 22 oz 22 ounces in a 24 oz jar

This old-fashioned vegetable soup starts with one of the cornerstones of traditional French country cooking. The term mirepoix refers to a sautee of vegetables and herbs that often serves as a base for soups, sauces, meat braises and other dishes. Here, we saute carrots, celery, leeks and onions with herbs in a little chicken fat from our house-roasted chickens. Grassfed Beef Bone Broth 22 oz. 22 ounces in 26 oz jar

This flavorful gelatin-rich broth is made from Marin Sun Farms beef bones and browned meat, filtered water, and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Our beef broth is cooked for approximately 48 hours before being jarred, lidded and cooled. According to Dr. Thomas Cowan, "In healthy, traditional cultures, when an animal was slaughtered, all the parts were put to use, including the bones, to make mineral-rich broth. Our modern diet, having largely forgotten the use of broth as the basis of our cooking, is estimated to have less than half the mineral content of more traditional diets. This rich mineral content and the fact that soup broths greatly aid digestion are just two of the many reasons why everyone should make soup broth a part of their daily diet."

We do not recommend that you freeze the beef broth in these jars. Although the jars are meant to be freezer-safe, we have found that the beef broth can still crack the jar when frozen. You can transfer the broth to a different container to freeze it. We find that, unopened, the broth lasts for four weeks or more in the fridge.

A shrub is a traditional fruit concentrate, like a syrup, preserved with vinegar and used to make or flavor beverages. Unlike many others, our version uses raw honey for a treat free of refined sugars! A few ounces with bubbly or still water makes a fabulous drink all on its own (we recommend 4 or 5 parts water to 1 part shrub), and there's no reason you couldn't use it as a cocktail mixer. Shrubs can also add zing to jam or salad dressing, and make a wonderful glaze for grilled meats.

The Essential Deodorant 4 oz. jar

It's back!  Limit 3 jars per customer as we begin to get this back on regular production. We're convinced our housemade deodorant is better than any aluminum-based, plastic-packaged deodorant on the market, to keep you smelling clean but not chemical-ly or perfume-y. We've played with our recipe to make it even more effective and nicer on the skin! Essential oils chosen for their antibacterial affect are blended into a base of coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax (from East Bay hives!) for a cream that is easy to apply with a barely noticeable scent.

Ingredients: coconut oil, refined shea butter, baking soda, arrowroot, beeswax, essential oils of black pepper, tea tree, lemongrass, rosemary and cedarwood.

Warming White Kimchi 1 pint jar

This nightshade-free variation on traditional kimchi recipes features ample amounts of horseradish, along with garlic, ginger, leeks and scallions, and traditionally brewed fish sauce, to create a beautiful and distinctive kimchi. Crisp daikon rounds out the texture and flavor of this unique kimchi. It has a bit of bite -- but not the kind of heat you get with the hot chiles in our Spicy Red Kimchi -- its warming umami goodness rippling across the peppery notes.
